Technical Implementation Engineer I

The Technical Implementation Engineering Team provides extensive support and subject matter expertise over Landis+Gyr’s Smart Grid solutions, including the various Head-End System Software Components, Network Devices and Field Endpoints (such as Electric Meters, Gas/Water Modules, Streetlight Controllers) during the deployment of these highly customizable solutions at Utility Companies all over the North America region.
 
The Technical Implementation Engineer (TIE) team serves as an initial escalation point for technical issues that are complex in nature, which are escalated from the program support teams. During the initial onboarding phase and beyond, the TIE will be expected to continually gain and demonstrate a thorough understanding of existing and new Landis+Gyr Hardware and Software solutions as well as the ability to install, configure and troubleshoot these products. They will also be involved in cross-training teammates, other teams, as well as customers. The position provides in-depth technical support by working across departments, including Development, Engineering, SQA, Product Management and Project Management. The TIE team is responsible for driving a resolution to technical issues while fully documenting the progress and resolution of these issues. If technical issues cannot be resolved, the TIE is expected to gather enough detailed technical information before engaging appropriate engineering teams. In addition, the position requires strong customer service skills and knowledge of utility business functions to support the Technical Implementation Manager (TIM) with the deployment of Landis+Gyr solutions for customers.

 

The TIE I role is an entry-level position in a dynamic team that deploys and sustains critical smart grid infrastructure and offers an opportunity to learn how the energy industry is evolving. The ideal candidate for this position is energetic, ambitious and eager to learn new skills in a fast-paced environment. The TIE Team also offers the opportunity to gain exposure to and learn about other roles and teams within Landis+Gyr.

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Owns software test environments, hardware and testing lab to support the deployment organization.
  • Develop subject matter expertise in two-way electric AMI technology, from head-end software to hardware endpoints deployed in the field.
  • Gain expertise over the use of troubleshooting tools and deployment procedures of rapidly evolving Landis+Gyr Smart Grid products and solutions.
  • Document and train others on commonly used tools, procedures, and troubleshooting techniques used while deploying solutions.
  • Conduct and assist investigations via videoconferencing/calls/emails with customers.
  • Support System Acceptance Testing (SAT) for new customer deployments and resolve any issues that arise while testing.
  • Provide on-call support outside of working hours as a technical resource on a rotational basis.
  • Support manufacturing resources in Product Configuration Approval (PCA) to validate that smart meter configurations meet customer requirements.
  • Provide strong support during cross-departmental technical activities.
  • Adhere to formal change control process and release management process.
  • Ensure CRM tickets are fully documented and resolved or escalated to appropriate support tier, within SLA guidelines.
  • Proactively follow through on all technical issues worked to ensure items are addressed accurately and promptly.
  • Support software installation or hardware commissioning activities for new releases and provide post-implementation support.
  • Participate in response teams for root cause analysis of system problems identified in the deployment of company solutions.
  • Act as the liaison to the other business units within Landis+Gyr, as needed, to resolve and follow through on issues/defects.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong analytical skills, the ability to complete methodical root cause analysis and troubleshoot technical issues involving hardware and software is required
  • Fundamental IT and Networking knowledge of concepts such as IP Addressing, DNS, DHCP is highly desired
  • Familiarity with Windows Server and Linux operating systems is highly desired
  • A strong inclination to gain technical skills in different domains and knowledge of Landis+Gyr technologies is required
  • A strong inclination to learn things independently to solve technical problems that arise in deployments is required
  • Demonstrate good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for solving problems and obtaining solutions
  • Being highly adaptable in a dynamic work environment is required
  • Ability to plan and maintain schedules is required
  • Ability to work well in an environment driven by high standards for service and system delivery is required
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work under stressful conditions

  • Utility domain knowledge is desired
  • Knowledge of basic concepts in power distribution systems is desired

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science degree is required
  • Experience with Windows desktop/server and UNIX platforms is highly desired
  • Experience working in Software Delivery, SaaS, or IT Operations is desired
  • Utility operations experience is desired
  • Experience working with Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is desired
  • Experience in a technical role working with both software and hardware is desired
  • Experience with Oracle or SQL Server databases is desired
  • Experience with wireless technologies is desired
  • Background in software quality testing is desired
  • Experience with Networking and Scripting is highly desired
  • Experience or Coursework on Networking, IT, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering is a plus
