Program Manager

Under general direction of the Director, Program, the Manager, Program III is the single point of contact for Company customers for the delivery and execution of large, complex, multi-phase/multi-project, multi-dimensional, and high profile programs (typically over $25M in revenue and including one or more of the following dimensions:  international operations, multiple partners and subcontractors, load control, volt/var solutions, Meter Data Management System implementation, microEMS, and other advanced smart grid solutions).  The role is accountable for customer satisfaction which is driven by strong execution of contract(s) to deploy technical smart grid solutions for customers.                                                                                                                              

 

Role includes analysis and reporting of the financial performance of the program, weekly status reporting, and hands-on management of the efforts of the program team to meet the contractual requirements.  Significant time is spent working closely with the customer to develop program schedules, program management plans, deployment plans, materials forecasts, and other plans.  The Manager, Program III requires significant leadership and is seen as a leader and proven mentor as well as someone who is a trusted, collaborative partner with Company customers while managing customer expectations.  The position also requires seasoned skills and business acumen to lead sizeable programs.  The Manager, Program III has superior interpersonal skills and experience with Project Management Institute (PMI) and Company methodologies and leads others by influence to share lessons learned and adopt best practices.

 

The incumbent follows existing, standardized procedures for managing projects to ensure timely completion of programs on budget and within scope.  The individual has a well-developed understanding of all phases of program/project management, the Company's Order-to-Acceptance lifecycle process, and PMI methodology.   The Manager, Program III possesses strong technical knowledge to communicate complex, technical details to stakeholders and customers and to facilitate customer confidence in the Program Manager’s ability to oversee the highly technical aspects of the program and assigned technical resources.                                                                                                                                                                    

 

Having the ability to incorporate risk management into the program team's culture, diffuse tense issues, and possess well-developed and effective communications with all levels of an organization is also necessary.  Willingness to be available for customer requests during off-hours is a component of successfully managing these complex programs.

Primary Statement of Duties

  • Provides leadership, guidance, and coaching to members of the program team.
  • Acts as the principal customer interface and widely recognized as a trusted, collaborative partner with the customer and other stakeholders.
  • Proven leader capable of communicating complex technical details to a wide variety of customer stakeholder groups.
  • Conducts periodic performance reviews of program team and provide feedback.
  • Leads and directs resources to fulfill all contractual obligations, performance levels, and service levels for one or more complex customer programs.
  • Initiates, plans, executes, controls, and ensures final customer acceptance of assigned customer programs.
  • Coordinates all the activities of the team and indirect support resources to ensure all aspects of the project are managed exceptionally well and quality deliverables are produced and agreed upon with program stakeholders.
  • Drives issues to resolution independently or via other company resources and manages customer expectations appropriately.
  • Responsible for reporting and controlling the financial health of programs including budgeting and forecasting.
  • Manages a program's scope, schedule, and cost while managing risk.
  • Ensures all internal stakeholders (Finance, Sales, Operations, Product Management, executives) are apprised of status, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), issues, and risks and are aligned and fully engaged with the program.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive operational improvements.
  • Supports and adheres to Company’s core values.

Education and Experience

Required Minimum Level of Education: Bachelor’s Degree
Required Minimum Years of Experience: 10+ to 15.

 

Desired Education/Experience
Minimum of bachelor’s degree in related area of focus, MBA preferred.
12 years’ experience in managing complex technical projects.
Experience in the utility, telecommunications, or similarly regulated industries

 

Required/Desired Certifications (if any): Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and strong working knowledge of PMI methodology.

  • Expert user of PMI best practices and thorough knowledge of Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) methodology and standards and can adhere to company PM procedures and tools/templates/systems.

  • Ensures assigned program(s) remain on schedule, on budget, and within scope.
  • Solid understanding and experience working with utilities and large organizations.
  • Ability to work within a matrix organization and lead resources that may or may not be dedicated to the project(s) as well as ability to develop key business unit relationships (Legal, Product Management, Sales, Finance, Supply Chain, R&D)
  • Drives stakeholder engagement and executive leadership alignment.
  • Ability to define processes, resources, capabilities, and integration points for new solutions to be delivered.
  • Possesses strong negotiation, facilitation, and consensus building skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead internal continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Can use influence to ensure indirect resources support the assigned project(s) when required.
  • Ability to think and react quickly with a large degree of accuracy, confidence, and focus on customer satisfaction.
  • Strong contract management skills and can manage scope and identify issues requiring documented contract change orders.
  • Strong ability to control projects via effective KPIs and proactive risk management.
  • Possesses strong business acumen - P&L and financial skills including ability to forecast revenues/expenses and drive additional revenue opportunities.
  • Strong ability to resolve conflicts and diffuse tense situations with customers.
  • Ability to accept change and respond to setbacks with minimal disruptions.
  • Communicates with ease up and down an organization, with well-developed written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
  • Advanced knowledge and use of MS Office suite of applications including MS Project.
  • Demonstrated ability to represent the organization in a confident and professional manner in pre-contract business development activities.
  • Can work at a fast pace and manage multiple priorities with ease.
