Key Purpose of Role:
The primary job function for this position is administering the Nagios monitoring application, writing, editing and implementing code for Nagios monitors, as well as performing enhancements and upgrades to the Nagios monitoring tool/process. Additionally, this role will perform automation, scripting, data analysis, case investigation and routine tasks as assigned.
Possessing intermediate product knowledge and a strong technical background, the Nagios Engineer delivers solutions for challenging application, system, and service related issues.
Areas of Responsibility / Tasks:
Administer Nagios Application
Performs automation, scripting, data analysis, case investigation and routine tasks as assigned
Able to create, edit and troubleshoot custom scripts
Ability to code procedural languages, specifically PERL
Works independently 80%+ of the time.
Ability to work special events during the weekends (Maintenances, Disaster Recovery Exercises, Application Upgrades and Installs)
Triage, diagnose and escalate incidents to other support groups; responsible for sharing knowledge for all escalated incidents
Logs, accurately tracks and documents all work within ticketing system, Customer relationship management (CRM).
Able to resolve customer complaints via phone, email, and CRM
Perform Nagios upgrades, patches and recommend process enhancements
Ability to create and implement Nagios monitors
Skill set requirements:
Understanding of programming logic and the ability to troubleshoot systems by following code
Intermediate to advanced perl scripting skillset for extending core Nagios functionality and implementing plugins
Experience designing and implementing dynamic monitoring systems
Ability to multi-task
Strong written and oral communication skills
Ability to work independently or with a team
Write and execute SQL and Oracle queries
Data analysis
Scripting/Programming
Technical troubleshooting
Self-motivated
Strong customer service skills
Excellent phone etiquette
Strong sense of urgency to resolve or escalate issues
Required Experience
Experience with procedural languages such as Perl, Microsoft PowerShell, PhP, ColdFusion, Shell, PLSQL.
Familiar with new technologies in machine learning and works to implement new solutions for monitoring.
1 - 3 years experience with Nagios monitoring engine.
Experience designing and implementing monitoring alerts for extensive infrastructure environments (Hosts, Network devices and services).
Experience with the following software programs: Windows, Windows Server Environment, Microsoft Office, SQL Server, Oracle, UNIX, Sun Solaris or related programs.
Experience with general PC hardware, communication devices, and/or networking.
Experience with troubleshooting and creating scripts.
Experience with case creation and management using ticketing software.
RF experience desirable.
Utility operations experience is a plus.
