Firmware QA Engineer II

We're looking for an experienced embedded firmware QA Engineer to join our high-profile team.  You will be responsible for verifying metering and network products as part of the Landis+Gyr utility solutions to an international audience! This is a challenging and exciting position where you will conduct testing activities on software and firmware development projects within the Communications Device Delivery department.


Responsibilities include the design, execution and management of test plans, scripts and cases, set up, configuration and implementation of test environments, and the identification and management of issues for each development project.


Working experience in Software development lifecycle and agile methodologies are needed


Key Responsibilities

  • Under general direction, plans and performs engineering duties for part of a major project or for projects of moderate complexity. Acts as technical authority in areas of specialty on assigned projects. 
  • Assists all levels of software/firmware engineers, and project managers with testing, test data set creation, and other activities related to testing. Uses established policies and procedures to complete work assignments. Work assignments are varied in scope and complexity.  
  • Required to use specialized computer applications to perform duties and maintain testing environments. 
  • Must be extremely adaptive in responding to ad hoc testing issues that arise, and still be able to successfully multi-task and prioritize to meet scheduled testing objectives.       
  • Create, revise, and execute test strategies, test plans, test cases, test scripts, demo docs and test reports 
  • Set up and maintain test environments 
  • Communicates effectively and works closely with internal and external resources 
  • Provides status reports and participate in departmental and project team meetings and email communications 
  • Identifies testing risks and proposes solutions to mitigate 
  • Provides escalations in a timely manner and through the appropriate channels 
  • Establishes and maintains strong working relationships with cross functional team members 
  • Provides input into continually improving quality processes and procedures 
  • Serves as an escalated support resource for products released 
  • Work directly with developers/architects/product owners to ensure requirement implementation/verification correctness and to review test case coverage. 
  • Log, document, verify and close defects   
  • Participate in project meetings to gather information required for testing 
  • Review log files and other run-time documentation for defects and issues  
  • Follow project and corporate plans, standards, and procedures to perform verification 
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required. 
  • Represent Company in a positive, professional manner when working with both external and internal customers.

Education and Experience


  • Bachelor's  degree in computer science, engineering or related field required
  • 3-5 years experience of testing experience or master's degree in related field and 2-4 years of engineering experience.
  • Experience with Agile Software Development Methodologies. 


Desired Certifications:

  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Membership in a quality-related organization (e.g. SQA, QAI) and/or any of the following software/firmware testing-related certifications is highly desirable:   

            Certified Software/firmware Quality Analyst (CSQA), Certified Software/firmware Tester (CSTE), Certified Software/firmware Test Professional (CSTP). 


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities



  • Experience with hardware and/or network technologies 
  • Must possess strong written and oral communications skills 
  • Excellent troubleshooting ability 
  • Experience diagnosing HW/SW interactions 
  • Team player with strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills  
  • Ability to proficiently utilize standard computer applications as they relate to software/firmware development and testing. Such programs may include, but not limited to: Linux Shells, Wireshark, Terminal Emulators, and various editors 
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines  
  • Experience with source control and automated build systems 
  • Experience with Linux/Unix set up and configuration 
  • Experience working with the full software development life cycle 
  • Experience with using automation frameworks (Selenium, Robot and other key word based systems) 
  • Proficient and good experience with Quality Assurance Test Tools.  
  • Able to convey information concisely and clearly to all levels of personnel. 
  • Able to communicate with users in non-technical terms both verbally and in writing. 
  • Able to work with minimal supervision and to work on several active projects simultaneously. 
  • Exceptional interpersonal and teamwork skills. 


Highly Preferred: 

  • Test tool, test automation, or production-level programming experience with any of the following is desired (in order of preference): Python, Java, C# 
  • Experience with embedded development is preferred 
  • Experience with the following technologies (in order of preference): Networking Testing (including protocol analysis and load testing), Shell Scripting, Hardware Design and Trouble-shooting 
  • Experience in the utility industry 
  • Experience with Linux/Unix set up and configuration is desired 
  • Experience with source control and automated build systems
