Director, Software Development

The Director of Software Development is a leadership role accountable for the successful delivery of software and solutions for Landis+Gyr’s Command Center Head End System and related device tools applications. The responsibilities include;

  • designing and developing Head End System for large-scale Smart Grid and IoT system using varied range of technologies (C#, .NET, Kafka, Cloud/Microservices, Java, Oracle, etc.)
  • managing a team of developers and specialists. 
  • working closely with the Head of Software Development and other members of the Senior Leadership Management Team in America’s technology organization in order to deliver software and solutions that meet user needs. 


This role is accountable for all aspects associated with the development and delivery of the HES software portfolio.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all aspects of planning, direction, and delivery for all HES software, tools and applications. Product scope of responsibilities include Command Center, Tools (including metering tools), and other advanced applications, and platform related software technologies.  Scope covers both new product release as well as ongoing maintenance activities.
  • Deliver software requirements on time and to budget. Contribute and participate in Global Software Development Strategic decisions about technology, definition, and implementation of the software at the regional level and global level.
  • Recruit, train, develop, and retain top talent; motivate, mentor and coach team members.
  • Develop and deliver as per the strategic technological vision and direction set by the Technology Organization. Lead and manage the Software Development teams to deliver software and architecture that meets the needs of users. Ensure delivery is consistent with Agile processes across the team. Functional scope of responsibilities:  software development, software quality assurance, SDLC direction and other necessary support functions associated with the delivery of software. Scope to cover both the own-operate products, as well as those for the SaaS and managed services customers.


Other Responsibilities

  • Work effectively with Product Managers and Product Owners to ensure delivery against agreed priorities.
  • Implement mechanisms to monitor, manage and provide progress on HES software development activities.
  • Accountable for the on time and to quality delivery of HES software projects.
  • Create, implement and maintain a continuous improvement plan for software development teams.
  • Work closely with the Product Managers with the aim of meeting current and future user needs.
  • Establish clear organizational structures and succession plans aligned with appropriate responsibilities, accountabilities and personal development for the team members in line with any anticipated growth;
  • Ensure that the skills and experience of the team is consistent with technological and business needs for providing quality in present and future services
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Education & Experience
Required Minimum Level of Education: Bachelor's Degree
Required Minimum Years of Experience: 10+ to 15


Desired Education/Experience

  • BS or MS in CS with
  • 12+ years overall industry experience
  • 5+ years managing software development/delivery teams
  • 8+ years’ experience in software product companies
  • Strong background in software architectures, scalability, and usability
  • 2+ years’ experience with Agile methodology
  • Overall strong track record of success in setting technical direction, driving SDLC process, and delivery of products to market on time, on budget, and meeting market requirements



  • Experience with products and services delivery technologies
  • Experience of successfully designing and developing sophisticated software products deployed in a variety of environments
  • Strong understanding of the Agile software development cycle
  • Working and leading teams in an Agile environment
  • Familiar with more than one software development methodology
  • An understanding of databases (including relational databases)
  • An understanding of the handling of large-scale enterprise software systems
  • Experience with enterprise software applications, networking and network management systems, security technologies, back-office integration and SOA/enterprise service bus, and SaaS a strong plus
  • Proficient in one or more Enterprise software programming languages (C#.Net, Pro*C, SQL tuning, PLSQL)
  • Performance and line management of highly skilled teams
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
